Change how portfolio pages are formatted

Hi
when I click on a portfolio item to go to an individual portfolio page, it strips out all formatting from the WP editor, e.g. paragraphs, headings, that I used when I made the portfolio page. It also cuts off the text at a selected length. Is there a way of turning all this behaviour off?
